The church exists for mission as fire exists for burning.
— Rev. D. T. Niles
Churches are sanctuaries from the struggles of the world, places of refuge and renewal for many of us; yet, Jesus was about more than comfort alone. In fact, Jesus afflicted the comfortable as much as he comforted the afflicted. His message was both social and personal.
In a world of doubt and fear, hatred and injustice, poverty and suffering, we are called to offer Christ’s ministry of faith and hope, peace and justice, compassion and service. Here are a few ways we do this, both locally and globally.
Our members are engaged in hands-on mission.
Several years ago, two of our members started the Center of Hope (Haiti), an orphanage and school that includes a church and medical clinic. Other members volunteer for local organizations.
We grow vegetables in Margaret’s Garden to help fund Habitat for Humanity of Westchester, as well as Center of Hope (Haiti), and actively collect food on our campus for the Ecumenical Food Pantry in White Plains, which serves some 650 households in need.
We support mission and social justice with our facilities. By providing at-cost space to vital community programs, we support individuals, families and children who live with a variety of challenges. Cerebral Palsy of Westchester and Family Services of Westchester both have child care centers on our campus. We also provide space for Al Anon and other non-profit groups devoted to human healing and hope.
We support mission and social justice with our funds.
Through seasonal offerings and designated giving to American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), we provide ongoing support to the wider work of our denomination. We are proud to belong to a denomination that proactively supports just peace, human rights, religious freedom, and interfaith cooperation.
We support mission and social justice with our engagement. Our Pastor is an active member of the White Plains Religious Leaders group, an inter-faith group of congregational leaders committed to civil dialogue, civic collaboration and community service.
