First Baptist Church

What kind of Baptists are we? History has tended to lose sight of the real Martin. Many have forgotten that he was an American Baptist pastor who based his liberating message on the Gospel of Jesus. His oratorical skills were legendary but only a select group of aging Baptists remember his biting wit and his devastating parodies of preaching styles. He fancied himself a pool shark and he usually defeated all challengers at the table. And most people know that, like the mighty patriarchs of the Bible, he had flaws and shortcomings. He wasn't always a successful organizer. His opposition to the Vietnam War alienated some of his closest supporters. But despite occasional discouragements and set-backs, he never tired in his campaign for justice and peace for all people. When we think of what kind of Baptists we want to be, we think of him.
